What is osseointegration? Dental implants work by a process known as osseointegration, which occurs when bone cells attach themselves directly to the titanium surface, essentially locking the implant into the jaw bone. This process was first discovered by a Swedish researcher, Per-Ingvar Brånemark, in the 1960’s. Placing dental implants into the jaw bones by controlled surgical procedures allow them to “osseointegrate.” Osseointegrated implants can then be used to support prosthetic tooth replacements of various designs and functionality, replacing anything from a single missing tooth to a full arch (all teeth in the upper and lower jaw). These replacement teeth are usually made to match the natural enamel color of each patient which offers a completely natural appearance and a whole new smile. |

Goals Provides basic information about most dental symptoms, diagnoses and procedures Enables patients to locate dentists who can provide helpful (specific) information about dental needs and treatment options Background Symbyos first launched ToothIQ.com in 2008 as an employer oral health portal to help our IQ Dental Plan customers make informed decisions about the care they received. Because this information could also help the general public, we made a portion of the information available on the Web. Consumers can use the site to get a basic idea about dental topics, and are encouraged to visit dentists who use ToothIQ professional educational services to help them understand their specific needs and treatment options. Currently, over 2,000 dental professionals in 32 states and 5 countries have access to ToothIQ professional resources. Trustworthy oral health info Being unbiased and transparent about diagnosis and treatment is critical to optimizing health outcomes. With ToothIQ.com, Symbyos set out to build a basic oral health information site that provides clear, objective and trustworthy health information. Before launching the site, we assembled a blind peer-review panel of 29 dentists (general dentists and board-certified specialists), hygienists, physicians, and educators. Each evaluated the content and provided feedback, which resulted in the most extensively reviewed oral health content available. Then we submitted the site for review by the Health On The Net Foundation, an organization located in Geneva, Switzerland that evaluates health websites, makes recommendations and (if appropriate) certifies them as credible. ToothIQ.com has been HON certified since April 2008. Bringing patients and dentists together Every day, people all over the world search online for answers to oral health questions: symptoms, diagnoses, procedures, and treatment options. A significant number land on ToothIQ.com, where they find comprehensive oral health information–logically organized, linked together, and smart search-enabled by a dentist. Many look for a dentist in the ToothIQ.com Find-a-Dentist directory, who will continue to involve them in care decisions by using ToothIQ’s professional resources to help them understand their needs and options. If broken and shattered bones could be successfully replaced and repaired with artificial implants, why not teeth? That was the thinking that led to the development of dental implants as a better alternative to dentures by some of the founders of the American Academy of Implant Dentistry (AAID), the first professional organization in the world dedicated to the advancement of implant dentistry. Established in 1951, the AAID is steadfastly dedicated to top quality patient care and to research, education and excellence in implant dentistry. The more than 4,500 members of the Academy include general dentists, specialists, individual practitioners and members who are part of a team. The AAID offers a credentialing program to signify professionals who have demonstrated competence in implant dentistry. The AAID’s Associate Fellow and Fellow credentials – stringent requirements that must be earned through education, training and examination – are recognized by numerous state boards |
